Why Joy Outside of Work Matters
For much of my career, I believed success meant always being busy. I worked full time, raised two boys, and went to law school part time. Life moved fast, and most days were full from morning to night. Somewhere along the way, I learned an important lesson. Ambition is important, but joy is essential.
Hobbies and personal passions are not distractions from professional success. They are what make it sustainable. When we give ourselves permission to enjoy life outside of work, we show up better in every role we hold.
“Rest and joy are not rewards,” I often say. “They are fuel.”
Learning Balance the Hard Way
Like many professionals, I spent years putting everyone else first. I loved my work and took pride in doing it well. At the same time, I was raising children, supporting my family, and managing constant responsibility. When my oldest son was diagnosed with a brain tumor on my first day of law school, perspective came quickly and clearly.
That moment reminded me that life does not pause for our schedules. It also taught me that caring for ourselves allows us to care better for others. Over time, I learned to protect small moments of joy. Those moments became anchors during stressful seasons.
“You cannot pour from an empty cup,” I remind myself often.
Baking as a Creative Outlet
One of my favorite ways to unwind is baking. Cupcakes, in particular, are my specialty. Baking allows me to slow down, follow a process, and create something that brings happiness to others. There is something grounding about measuring ingredients and watching something simple turn into something special.
After long days filled with meetings and complex decisions, baking helps me reset. It brings me into the present moment. It also reminds me that not everything needs to be perfect to be meaningful.
“Baking is my way of being creative without pressure,” I say. “It is just joy for the sake of joy.”
Sharing what I bake with family and friends adds another layer of fulfillment. It turns a hobby into connection, which is something every professional needs.
Staying Active for Mental Strength
Working out has also become an important part of my routine. I played sports growing up and danced in high school, so movement has always been part of my life. As an adult, exercise helps me manage stress and maintain focus.
Physical activity clears my mind in ways that few other things can. It gives me time to think without distraction or, sometimes, not think at all. Both are equally valuable.
“Movement keeps me balanced,” I often say. “It strengthens not just my body, but my mindset.”
Professionals often underestimate how closely physical health and mental clarity are connected. Even short workouts can make a meaningful difference in energy and mood.
The Power of Reading
I have been an avid reader since childhood and still am today. I read across genres, from fiction to nonfiction to books that challenge how I think about the world. Reading gives me perspective and reminds me that there is always more to learn.
For professionals, reading can be both an escape and a source of inspiration. It allows us to step outside our own experiences and see life through different lenses.
“Books slow me down,” I explain. “They help me listen more and assume less.”
That mindset carries into leadership, decision-making, and relationships.
Sports, Family, and Shared Joy
Watching sports has always been part of my life. Growing up in Green Bay made me a lifelong Packers fan. Sports bring my family together and create shared experiences that have nothing to do with work or schedules.
Family time is my greatest source of joy. Whether we are watching a game, traveling, or simply being together, those moments remind me why balance matters.
“My family keeps me grounded,” I say. “They are my why.”
As my children have grown into adults, those shared moments have become even more meaningful.
Travel as Renewal
Travel is another passion my family and I share. Exploring new places helps us step outside routine and see the world with curiosity. Travel teaches flexibility, patience, and appreciation for different cultures.
For professionals, travel can refresh creativity and perspective. It reminds us that our daily challenges are part of a much bigger picture.
“Travel resets my thinking,” I often say. “It reminds me how much there is to experience beyond my to-do list.”
Making Space for Joy
Finding joy does not require major lifestyle changes. It starts with intention. Scheduling time for hobbies, even in small ways, sends a powerful message to ourselves. It says our well-being matters.
Professionals who nurture their passions tend to be more resilient, focused, and fulfilled. Joy creates energy. Energy fuels purpose.
“Success is not just what you accomplish,” I believe. “It is how you feel while you are doing it.”
By embracing hobbies and personal passions, we create lives that are not only productive, but deeply satisfying. Joy in the everyday is not optional. It is essential for a life well lived.
